Shape of Sound

Exploring the realms of light, sound and voltage, the project aims at visually portraying a sound through its light-generated waveform.

 

A stream of light is projected on gears of different shapes whose rotating speed can be controlled affecting the pitch of the generated sound. In the meantime, a light sensor detects speed and which shape of the gear is being projected generating a sound and its corresponding waveform on an oscilloscope.

Shape of Sound was realised working with the London-based studio Kai Lab. Developing this project consisted in working between sound synthesis, electronics, 3D designing and printing.
